Hip-Hip Hooray! St Mary's is awarded Green-school Flag for Biodiversity.
The Green-schools Committee gathered together on Wednesday to watch the 2022 Green-Schools Award Ceremony. The ceremony lasted for one hour and included awards for all the various themes from Litter & Waste to Global Citizenship – Marine Environment. As Green-Schools is an international environmental education programme, we had the opportunity to view the work on various themes not only in schools all over the country but also in schools around the world. It was very impressive and encouraging to see so many like-minded children all over the world caring for the planet. The children heard from Daithi down in West Kerry encouraging the children ‘chun aire a thabhairt don nádúr’ and from Captain Climate from the Climate Ambassador Programme.
Our theme was Biodiversity and as this theme was called out, our Green-schools committee was glued to the screen watching out for ‘St Mary’s’ and photos of their work.
We are thrilled to receive our Green Flag for Biodiversity. This is our 5th Green Flag at St. Mary’s. We already have the flag for Litter & Waste, Energy, Water and Travel. As part of attaining our Green Flag for Biodiversity, we had to ensure that all of the previously awarded flags/themes are being maintained in our school. We will continue to maintain these and continue to develop our work for biodiversity.
While classes tuned into the Award Ceremony on the day, the Green-schools Committee proudly revealed the flag to all in the school yard to a rapturous applause and a huge 'go raibh míle maith agat' to Ms Purcell for announcing a homework free night.
Congratulations to ALL children of St. Mary’s who helped to achieve the Green-Flag. The children participated in all kinds of activities, events, surveys, demonstrations, projects, investigative work, nature walks, webinars, art-work….
